Almonaster la Real is a particularly beautiful village in an area of beautiful villages, the Sierra de Arecena at the western end of the Sierra Morena. Although generally delightful, it really only has one distinctive sight but this is a really good one. It's a church now [the odd service is still held there] and there's a bullring adjacent that's used once a year. However it's main impact depends on its past status as a fortified mosque, even though there are still traces of an even more ancient past as a Visigothic church and even a Roman temple. Although it lacks both the size and decoration of the Great Mosque of Córdoba, it is on the same five aisled pattern. Its position on a mountian top means that it dominates the view for some distance.
The village is a good centre for walks and the sierra offers a number with waymarks. [edit text][editors]
