Besalu is a small city easily reached by bus from Gerona in Catalunya. Its Jewish and Christian history goes way back. The city has a 10th century monastery with an extant church dating from the very begining of the 11th century.
The medieval town lies down from the bus stop and has an unspoilt feel, in spite of considerable tourist numbers. At the bottom of the hill, one of the so-called 'Tourist Trains' - actually an articulated bus - runs around the old city and out into the country.
However, the really stunning sight is just near the terminus of the 'train' and can be seen for some distance. This is the fortified bridge.
