The church of the Romario [pilgrimage]
El Rocio is not like any other village you will find near it - or indeed in Spain. It's more like the setting for a western and it is said to have been used for this. There is sand, laid quite deep over all the streets in the centre.
However it has two main claims to fame. The one it would probably put first is religious - the annual Romero or pilgrimage, during which time it is quite prohibitively expensive.
The second is best out of high summer. This is its immediate proximity to the Doñana nature reserve, one of Europe's best known wetland reserves.
There is a large expanse of fresh water where any number of species of duck and goose can be seen as well as flamingos, stilts and a mass of waders.
On a trip into the park you have an excellent chance of seeing red and fallow deer and wild boar. [edit text]  [editors]
