Montserrat must be the favourite venue for a trip from Barcelona. It's easy to get there by public transport from the Plaza de España. [Buy a ticket that includes the cable-car.]
It's the monastery that accounts for the cable-car being there at all and, when you get up, there are two funicular railways nearby. The one going downhill will probably do you no good unless you are into shrines but the other goes high up near the top of the mountains and leads to some excellent walking country.
As for the monastery itself, impressions range between total admiration and the view that it's a blot on an otherwise fine landscape. Make up your own mind but, be that as it may the landscape certainly does impress with its amazing rock formations.
In the monastery there is a black Madonna and at 1.00pm the boys' choir does a chant. [edit text]  [editors]
