Hi everybody,

lots of you have requested it a while ago: Publishing reports on landscapes like for example mountains. Today the first step is available and you can now publish reports on mountains. The database contains now over 220 thousand names of mountains from all over the world. This are for sure not all, but a huge part of it.

If everything goes well other landscapes will follow in the next few weeks.

Best regards,

andy

Very well done

I see you have even included our little Irish hills like the Blackstairs in Wexford, (mind you it is also part of County cARLOW!!-but no matter) and Muckish mountain in Donegal.

Amazing.

Thank you.

Hugh

inclusion of the mountain names into the other content upload engines will come. For now this is in testing mode. Over 200000 names have to be handled and there might be potential errors and occuring problems with that new feature. The geodatabase is very complex.

Let's see how it goes with the mountains. As soon as some people start writing reports on mountains we will recieve some feedback allowing it to expand the service. There are national parks and other landscapes comming up.

Regards

andy

Thanks so much for this, the best places are not always near cities!

I hope to write reports soon on some of my best mountains, see that Mulanje, Table Mountain, Hochstaufen and Unterberg are listed. Witkop is listed 4-times, supose I choose anyone (this also for city/town listings sometimes) I coundnt find Mont-Aux-Sources, its not listed in any variation of the name, it is one of the highest points in Southern Africa, borders on Lesotho (also not listed there) and source of three of the biggest rivers in South Africa... found out at www.encounter.co.za/article/93.html that it has a peak of 3282m, much higher than those surrounding...

Anyway, GREAT databank and wonderful new feature!

Hello rangutan,

thank you for finding this out. This is definatelly a serious problem (having one and the same entry multiple times) Let me see if that can be fixed.

Hello everybody,

the error rangutan found turns out to be a complex problem. Please do not submit a report on a mountain which is listed more than once untill a bug fix is found.

Thank you.

Regards, Andy

Hello Rangutan,

thank you so much for finding this error. After 1 day of research I found a way to fix this problem. We did have over 20.000 (that is 10% :-) duplicate entries. This could have caused a serious problem in the future.

If you search for Witkop now you will discover, that there is only one unique mountain with that name for South Africa.

Picasso: If you go to publish report, and you enter a name of a mountain, you will be able to search through the 200000 mountain names.

Let's see if this was the last error :-) I am very positiv that we can build one of the most complete and extensive databases on geographical names, so that you guys can publish reports on far away places on the whole planet.

At the moment we do have about 2.58 Million names from cities and mountains available.

Best regards,

Andy
