Andreas,

I know it has been subject to discussion before but I would like to suggest classifications to photos...

That way it would be possible to differentiate between photo classes;

For instance you would have a class structure like this : (I know this classification is bad, incorrect and lacks any taxonomy)

Pictures

Persons

--celeb

--portrait

..

Locations

--City

----(all locations coupled in this class)

--Landscape

--City

--Nature

--geograph. location (coords)

Animals

--Groups

--Birds

--Fish

--Reptiles

--Invertebrate

--..

Underwater (my specialty…)

--Diving

--Aquarium

On classification you would select any appropriate class. That way you would have a picture and describe its contents in a uniform way.

This classification, if set-up the right way, makes for great extra value. For most subjects there would be ready to use classification available… (animals for instance are standard classified)

In your pictures you would be able to classify a picture and make it possible to search or browse specific pictures, group and filter pictures, and lots more new functionality

For instance:

http://www.globosapiens.net/morc66/picture-whip-coral...-goby-26299.html

would be classified as Diving, Fish (and subclasses), Nature..

Now, if a user is interested in Diving … he just browses to the class diving and sees al the pictures that have that classification. (including pictures with my fish, but also persons (divers on pics))

If you would like to see only fish you just select class fish. e voila you end up with all fish in the database...

I would like to discuss this in this a bit further in the topic... If you (Andreas and other developers) are interested. Off course the examples I've just given are no good to you but since you are the developers you would know object oriented design pretty good. If you like I can present you with more technical solutions on how to do it...

Also I would like to know opinion of Globo users: would classification of pics be fun? (eg, being able to browse on subjects/classes)

Cheers,

Maurice

(edited... class structure flattened by application and edited some extra clarification)

I think this would probably be an improvement, particularly for visitors to the site but

1. I suspect it might be a big job and I don't think I should give it huge priority.

2. It would need some instruction on uploading - irksome to those familiar with it and a pain if those not familiar don't bother to read it.

I have just had a play to see what can be done now. Clicking on 'pictures' then putting either 'diving' or 'shell' in the browse box had a pretty good though by no means perfect effect. [e.g. 'shell' brought up the shell of a church alongside pictures of diving.]

In short, if it's easy and reasonably foolproof, yes; if, as I suspect, not, then I should accept whatever priority Andy gives it.

Cheers, David

I see it is not the most popular topic...

That is too bad. I think this classification system would enhance Globo very much.

I hope to see some of you respond, please... I know it is just a hypothetical discussion, since Andreas has to be able (and have the time) to build such a system... but wouldn't it be great to browse Globo on specific topics (like wildlife in switserland or sponges in aegean sea, or landscapes, sunsets, animals, australia for instance...)

Cheers,

Maurice

I think the idea is brilliant, that is why I do the "THEMEs" in the forum. Extreamly few, under 10 members support that though, I dont know how much longer I will bother continuing doing that!

Categorization by the member him/her self when uploading would benefit all. It's implemention (programming) is very difficult but beneficial in the long run. We now have 26000 pictures sorted geographically but when they are 100000 or more, how does one find a specific picture. I cannt find certain of my own pictures sometimes, categories would help!

On the other hand, upload proceedures should be kept simple. Members, specially non-english speakers, are already having technical and time problems in placing a picture correctly geographically or at all. I wish members would title and describe there pictures properly, then atleast they could be found eventually by an internal search engine, a better solution I think. Also, who goes back to all already archived pictures to categorize them?

We are principaly a "travel community", not a photography, scubadiving, birdwatching or other club but I see the point of categories/themes because we all travel with certain interests/hobbies in mind.....

Rangutan,

Your themes is a GREAT idea... but it does not work unless it is part of the site...

I really would like to have a statement from our developers on what they think is feasable.

Cheers,

Maurice
