Eilat - the ideal centre

  7 votes

Strategically based in the far south of Israel, pinched between Egypt & Jordan, Eilat is the ideal centre for visiting so many of the Middle East's major sites. In two weeks, it is perfectly possible to cover the Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Mount Sinai, the Negev, Dead Sea, Masada, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho (when politically possible!), the Judaean Desert, Suez, Cairo & Pyramids, Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Petra, etc., etc. A busy 2 weeks, but possibly the best hol of your life!

Favourite spots:
From Eilat, enjoy seeing Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia (and, of course, Israel) all from the one spot! Beautiful backing mountains to the north. Try the camel treks - not the half-hour tourist version, but a good trek from half-a-day to several days in great Negev Desert scenery.

What's really great:
The people - very, very friendly. Guaranteed sun!

Sights:
The whole southern areas of Israel & Jordan, plus eastern Egypt!

Accommodations:
Away from the 21st. century tower blocks, try the very comfortable 'Jewish' hotels to the east, and south of the small airfield.

Nightlife:
Plenty of bars for those who want them

Hangouts:
Bars are ample in the smallish town centre

Restaurants:
Many of all types available.

Other recommendations:
Not so much in Eilat itself, but a great centre for branching out.
