I was born and raised here, so I will do the best I can. Summer time is beautiful. Lots to do. The city itself, to be honest, is rather unattractive but it is a gateway to a plethora of outdoor activities. Some of the best stream fishing in the world, hiking, biking, MOOSE, rare to see a bear, animals everywhere, birds like crazy...winter has snowmachining (snow mobiling), dog sledding, NORTHERN LIGHTS, moose also galore, skiing, and lots of snow!
This is literally what the northern lights look like at times. This was an amazing show. Mostly green and dark to light blues, but sometimes you get this deep red.

Winter time, great 50 mile drive away is Chena Hot Springs. Bought a few years ago by new owners, they have really cleaned it up. Natural indoor and outdoor springs of all different temps. Great to in winter to sit outside in your swimsuit (can get as cold at -50F AND -47C) as you watch the aurora boriealis (northern lights) with cross country skiing and animal watching (lots of moose here summer and winter). Take a drive out to Cleary Summit for great views (Steese Hwy to Fox, make a right). In town, not too much to see, but things to do...

Riverboat Discovery is a good thing to take in. Very informative cruise a big sternwheeler that holds about 800 people max. You go to a Native Alaskan village (not authentic, but very well done), see dog sledding (even in summer), dry salmon, etc.

Drive to Denali National Park! Best spot in Alaska to see wildlife and Mt. McKinley (20,320 ft., tallest in N. America)

|
Lots of bed and breakfasts, check those out on the web. Princess Hotel, Westmark (good location for walking), lots of places.

|
Only one and I will not recommend it.

|
Pump House, Wed. night has karaoke, Capitan Bartlett Inn (decent pub).

|
Pump House, Pikes Landing.
