Colorful Town

Granada travelogue picture
The main part of Granada is pretty poor, but the primary section that backpackers go is great. Churches and regular buildings are painted in beautiful pastels of blue, yellow and light reds. It really gives a Central American colonial feel to it. There are a lot of fun night activities and excursions during the day as well, although I personally liked to walk around town shooting photo's instead.

Favourite spots:

There are two main things to check out. One, there is a lake formed in a volcano about 25 minutes from town. Go to The Monkey House in Granada to get info on getting there. It is very warm and great for swimming. The other is the market about a 15 minute bus ride from the main part of town. Great hamacks, art work there. Good place to do some shopping.

This photo is of one of two volcano's on Lago de Nicaragua. Interesting story...during the Spanish conquests of the area, they built a fleet of ships on lake expecting to sail across the Pacific...until they hit the other side of the lake. Very beautiful area and still has a few sharks in the lake...although they haven't been seen in a few years now. May be extinct.

What's really great:

The colors of the town. They are strikingly beautiful and make for great photographs. I also like the variety of restaurants and different kinds of food. Granada has everything you want here (which is a little rare for such a poor country).

Accommodations:
Monkey House is a popular backpackers place. There are all sorts of backpacker hostels here. Great community feeling.

Nightlife:
None that I know of.

Hangouts:
Lots of little restaurants that are more pub like than food oriented.

Restaurants:
A huge varitey. From pizza to local food to steaks.

Other recommendations:
Internet Cafe's everywhere, good trinkets to buy...lots of character throughout this town.
