SCUBA DIVING!!!

Sharm el-Sheikh travelogue picture
Sharm is an interesting place in the Sinai right on the Red Sea. Catered a little more the bigger spender, it is a great place for safety, hotels, relaxing on the beach (if you can stand the 110F heat), and especially diving. Culture is lost here, but you don't really go to the Sinai to soak up culture. It is also a great location for excursions to areas of Mt. Sinai and St. Catherines as well as colored canyon.

Favourite spots:

In the water! Lots of dive companies here (or were before 9/11, don't know how many were effected). Red Sea Divers is the biggest. Make sure you dive Ras Mohammad and the Thistlegorm.

What's really great:

Fighting with the cab drivers everyday without fail. It is just fun. Don't get annoyed or frustrated. They will always try to make you pay 50x the going rate. If you hop on the back of a truck or in the vans (which I would recommend...the sun will getcha otherwise), it is 5 pounds ONLY. Not 20. (hamsa ni=five pounds). Laugh with them. Getting aggresive won't help. If you laugh them off, they will know you know what you are doing.

Sights around the area. The Sinai is one of the oldest historical areas of the world. Get on a tour and head to Mt. Sinai. Do the night hike so you see the stars then the sun rise.

At the base of Mt. Sinai is St. Catherine's Cathedral that is said to hold the original seed from the burning bush as written in the old testament. Be sure to get a fews words in with one of the monks who is from, of all places, Texas. He is a very friendly man and likes to share his experiences with people.

(St. Catherine's is pictured below.)

Accommodations:

Lots of upscale hotels. Hilton, whatever you want. Only one backpackers place just north of the Rosetta Hotel.

Nightlife:

Crazy Daisy, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe (& quite a few other clubs).

Pictured to the right is St. Catherine's Monestary. About a three hour drive from Sharm.

Hangouts:
Camel Bar. (internet here too)
