Locarno in the Italian speaking canton of Ticino is situated on Lago Maggiore. Lakeside promenades lined with palm trees and bougainvillea and wooded slopes dotted with cypresses give the town a subtropical feel.
A mild climate and the most sunshine hours in any place in Swizerland make Locarno into a favourite holiday destination. Add to this the bustling piazzas and arcades with open air cafés serving pizzas, pasta and cappuccino and it is difficult to imagine that this is Switzerland and not Italy.
Locarno is the starting point of the Centovalli railway, one of Switzerland's most scenic train rides.
