Taipei, a city of about 4 million, is Taiwan's capital and largest city. Taipei boasts the world's finest collection of Chinese antiquities, courtesy of Chiang Kai-Shek's fleeing Nationalist Army in 1949. The National musuem holds over 700,000 artifacts from China's past.
Taipai also has the Martyr's Shrine, a must-see on any visit to Taipei. Here Taiwanese soldiers stand on guard for all those who have fallen in the defence of the Republic of China. The guards stand motionless for two hour stretches, oblivious to taunts and pokes from tourists.
Taipei also boasts the world's tallest building, Taipei 101, as well as a plethora of night markets, and the stunning Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. Taipei has an excellent train and bus system, so travel is easy. [edit text][editors]
