Back in Egypt after a year away . I travel a lot, but am always drawn back to Egypt...the friendliest place on Earth.I have never felt so at home, with the locals so happy to help me and just, in passing, to call out hello and Welcome

In Cairo, was met at the airport by an old friend and taken to a hotel called the Sara Inn Hostel (www.sarainnhostel.c-om)which proved to be the best place I have stayed in during my several trips to Egypt. Assim, the owner was so friendly and helpful and very honest. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the beds very comfortable....and so inexpensive....for a large room including bathroom and air conditioning, I paid the equivalent of $U.S15. Other rooms, without bathroom (but the bathrooms in the hotel were very clean) were even cheaper. I found an English language cinema off the main street (Talaat Harb St), and the 2nd hand book market at Attaba, which sells books in all languages, and where you can have a good conversation with the owners of the many booths there, and in the adjoining square, bought good cotton shirts, all for less than $10. I enjoy the rest of Egypt too, but feel that Cairo is underrated, as most people just stay two or three dauys before moving on and it's a city that deserves more time. I recommend visiting Cairo, and also staying at the Sara Inn. Enjoy. Tariq

Cairo, Siwa, Dahab, the latter being a great place to just hang out, and offering nearby destert treks (the Sinai) and diving and great restaurants.

The people.I was invited into many peoples' homes and the kids are just adorable. The Egyptians respond very well to a smile and go out of their way to make you comfortable.

Sara In Hostel (really more like a European pensione). www.sarainnhostel.com. In Aswan, I stayed at the Kelaney Hotel...very clean and comfortable, and in Luxor, rented a room in a house on the West Bank. If you go to the West Bank, just ask at the local cafe across the river about accomodation....it worked for me.

I really liked Bon Appetit, just across the road from the American University Library, just off Tahrir Square in Cairo. The food and service were excellent, and for a rather classy looking restaurant, the prices low.
Also liked Tabli, at the other end of Talaat Harb Street heading towards the Ramses Square Railway Station. Very clean and with good service and simple, tasty food.
