Angra Dos Reis is a good jumping off spot for traveling to Ilha Grande. The ferry from Angra to Vila Abraao on Ilha Grande is R$2.60 during the week. Ilha Grande is a large, beautiful island covered in forest and protected as an eco preserve.

Praia Lopes Mendes - a fantastic white sand beach with crystal clear Atlantic water. There is no village nearby, so the water is not polluted. It's a R$10 (about US$4) boat ride from the main town of Vila Abraao.

| What's really great: |
|
During the week there are very few people on Ilha Grande. There is a trail system throughout the island that facilitates hiking or just walking to your next location. Or, if you don't feel like taking a hike, take a boat to the beach. There are only two cars on the island. Both belong to the police.

Lagoa Azul, Lopes Mendes beach. Both are spectacular and usually empty during the week.

| Accommodations: |

Pousada So Natureza - spotless, well maintained. Real hot water rather than the duchas of death in most other pousadas. It's about R$60 per night (US$24). For cheaper accommodations try Betos.

| Restaurants: |
|
There are quite a few good restaurants in Vila Abraao. I did get sick after eating in one (the name of which I won't mention, but if you're interested, e-mail me.) Fortunately Cipro and immodium (called Diarec in Brazil) are available over the counter just down the street.
