My wife and I are going to Italy next month and we have to start looking for a hotel in Milan and Venice. I have bought a couple of guide books and I'm waiting for the mailman to bring them to me :-) But I'm wondering if anyone got a few recommendations when it comes to hotels in these two citis. We would of course like to find something cheap but on the other hand we do like out "luxury" (good breakfast, cable TV and so on). So hopefully some of you have some good advice for us on where we can stay.
I had a great time at the Hotel Locanda Gaffaro in Venice. Dorsoduro, 3589 30123 VENICE +39.041.2750897 Cut and paste of my previous travel writing on this hotel follows.
"Hotel Locanda Gaffaro is excellent, excellent, excellent for those who don''t want to spend too much, yet want the best service from every lire they spend on a room! Owners Davide and his father speak flawless English, and they are very accommodating. I had reserved a room for 4 nights, but had to cancel the last night due to commitments, and they waived all cancellation fees.
I had a room at the attic, which is really a whole lot more than I bargained for. It was absolutely stunning, and there''s a window on the roof within easy reach, through which I could look out and see the rest of the city outside... through the roof!!!
Breakfast is fantastic. Loaves, toasts, honey, marmalades, croissant, and oh, did I mention the juice? The Italian succo (pure juice and pulp) was like dew from heaven. You have a wide choice, ranging from pear and apple (the best!), to grapefruit, berry and melon. Also, I had a hot chocolate every morning which perked me up the rest of the day!
The hotel is in spanking new and clean conditions as it was just opened in November 2000. Book way ahead if you want to be guaranteed a room, because at such low rates (I paid so little even during peak carnevale season!) the rooms are snapped up pretty quickly.
The Locanda Gaffaro is 3 minutes from the Bus Station, 5 minutes from the Santa Lucia Train Station, and 15 minutes from San Marco."
Edited to add: costs between US$40-60 for a double attic room, depending on season

Hi, just searched for some advice about hotels in Venice. I´m italian but I never went to that city, and I would like to be there the first week of September with my new girlfriend, to see the Biennale of Art and the "Mostra del Cinema". I know that almost every Hotel, Guest Houses and B&B are fully booked for that period. Some suggestions? We would like to spend max euros 120 for a double room. We would like to be in a quite and romantic place. I saw and ad about a certain "Al Portico Guest House" that have a web site: http://loveinvenice.com, I see that they have got rooms available. But the pictures are not so good, it´s very central but I cannot understand how good it could be...does somebody know anything about that? It seems to be nice, but I don't know...
