itīs good to be a little bit cautious but i am living in argentina right now and i havenīt felt at all unsafe since i got here. stay out of colombia. argentina is safe, and chile is the safest country here. if you go to touristy areas like macchu picchu itīs really easy to run into other people to travel with, but there are also a lot more theives in these kinds of places. donīt talk too much to cab drivers, or anyone. itīs best not to bring things that will make you stand out. do you have any specific questions i can help you with?

To follow up on the last comment - leave jewelry home, wear a cheap watch, and avoid low cut tops or extremely short shorts. Machismo abounds - no need to be rude, but be careful. The heavily traveled areas are also heavily patrolled to protect the tourist industry. The one place I did find unsafe was Lima. Even though there were two of us, we had two different encounters that were unpleasant.
Have a blast!

in answer to ravinderkumarsi, i am travelling for a year and a half in total...starting in OZ and NZ, heading off to South America, mainly Brasil, for about 4-5 months, and then heading off to Turkey, Egypt, and Israel, where I will work for a while.
i'm not really too worried about South America anymore (thanks for everyoe's responses, once again!), I've been doing loads of homework, but I am still curious, especially about Carnaval and if it's totally insane...especially Rio
