I am on my gap year after finishing university, and am planning to travel and get work experience over the next year. I have just been offered a job in Jakarta for 4 months but I don't kow anything about the area and any info I have found so far seems to be a bit scary since I will be going alone and am from the UK! I would really apreciate any advice from those who have any personal experience of the city - whether it would be safe to go and work there alone for that time and what it is like etc.
Crime, bribery is rampant in the city, Bombs, massive ones by terrorists happens all too often.
Although people living in Jakarta may not agree wth my opinion, I have avoided this city in my travels for more than a year (I used to travel there for business monthly).
Never move around on your own without a local friend !!
Thanks so much or the advice. I had heard mixed reports about the region in books and on the net but it is hard to work out what has been exagerated and what has not been mentioned. I did have a bad feeling about going there on my own but you've helped me make up my mind not to risk it!
