If you want to read the most fantastic book set in India you have to get "sorcerers apprentice" by Tahir Shah. It is the most bizarre, funny and almost unbelieveable true travel narrative wtritten by a guy from England who goes all the way to India to learn trick magic from a master conjurer named Feroze. The first part of the book is set in Calcutta and in the second half he travels through the rest of India describing the most weird and wonderful things. It's impossible to put this book down once you start reading it and I totally reccomend it.
