Reading GLoria's reports on India, it is obvious that my daughter and I have some definite shopping obligations on our upcoming trip. What is the best way to deal with extra luggage? Generally I travel light and try to take some clothes I wouldn't mind leaving behind so I can use that space, along with a carry-on, for souveniers/gifts, but knowing my daughter, that is not going to be enough. I used DHL to send things back once, and I used http://www.excess-baggage.com/ when I was taking expensive costumes to Greece and bringing them back (largely because of customs concerns). Both were a little pricey. Suggestions?

Good health and high spirits!

Why not use the regular post? you can send it registered if you want. I have sent many things to myself that way. you can put a notation on the box saying
HOLD FOR PICKUP on such and such a date. or leave permission for someone to pick it up for you..I wouldn't bother with the insurance, as your dealing with a different country and it may be difficult to resolve things if the need arises. Also, make sure when you send the item back to you it says Gift on the custums form or "souveniers of your trip" otherwise customs may ding you for a charge. (that happens in Canada, don't know about the US)

It may take a longer time, but you don't have to pay an arm and a leg.

Hi Eire,

I suppose major airlines offer you 20kgs free allowance ..some airlines offer 30kgs.per adult. So both of you are entitled for free allowance of 40kgs(60kgs).
Pls check your ticket as it would be mentioned there. Many airllines in India allow you extra 5kgs per adult without any question. But if you cross over 25kgs (incase of 20kgs) or 35kgs, then some staff at the airport MAY ask you for extra baggage fee. Some would let you go without any charge. In such cases, make sure you check-in very very early fro your flight. These incidents i have seen in the airports.

If you, individually, have more than 30kgs(40kgs), then it would be better for you to carry all fargile items with you and non fragile items can be sent by air mail registered from any post office in india.

I suppose DHL would be expensive.
