If you are for the first time in south-east-asia it's maybe a little bit strange. There are always many people in the cities and it doesn't look clean all the time. But after a short time, you will see, you don't have to be afraid. Especially in Thailand, this country is THE backpacker-country. You will find many other tourists like you, who can give you informations about the other countries in this region. Best thing is to buy the lonely-planet. That will help you all the time.

A popular route in SE Asia would be Thailand, Vietname, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. If you decide to go as far as Indonesia, Bali is very unique and has beautiful beaches. Accomodation is cheap, you could get a clean room, airconditioned for less than 20 USD. There are so many choices to stay, Kuta is the central, Seminyak is nice but more pricy, Ubud is quiet and full of art galleries.
