Hi Globies,
Have you been to Irian Jaya - the Indonesian part of Papua? Any suggestions how to get there on a cheap from Asian hubs like Singapore? Is this possible to visit villages on your own or do you need a guide from local agency?
Thanks
Wojtek

Air Merpati, http://www.merpati.co.id has flightd from Jakarta to Jayapura. It is possible to visit villages on your own. Once you are there many people will offer their services and it is up to you to if you would like them to help you.
I have not been to Iran Jaya muself but my son's ex-girlfriend was in Irian for the past 8 months, she was working in an orphanage. If you need more specific information I can ask her.
These days most foreign nationals need a visa, which in most cases is valid for 30 days. This was introduced some 6 months ago. Most information about visas on the internet has not been updated.
