If you want to part with money there are several organisations that will sell you a package.
If you don't i can give some pointers. Do you have teaching qualifications, a TEFL or experience? And what sort of conservation are you thinking of?

Hey! I want to take a year off between high school and college, volunteering somewhere. Namely Nepal/ Tibet/ Thailand, starting around Sept. 04 and staying for at least 3 months, no more than 8 months. I'd want to work in an orphanage, teaching english, or conservation issues in a very rural area, i dont care about how great the standard of living is, i just want free room and board. Any ideas? Oh and i'll be 18 when i leave... I have some basic medical training, and lots of outdoor experience but no tefl or anything along those lines. Thanks
-Amanda :)

You go girl!!
I wish i had taken the opportunity to go at your age instead of waiting!
What you seriously need to consider though is with regards to doing rural voluntry work. Although it is an amazing opportunity it can be very difficult being so isolated, especially if you are young and it's the first time you have done any major travelling. Could you handle 3 months with no one else who understands you? Sometimes the chance to talk with someone about music, culture, something funny that happened on the way to the airport, is really what you need to survive the day. As wonderful as people are in Nepal/Thailand there are just somethings that they can't comprehend. I don't want to dissuade you, I want to encourage you but i want you to get the most out of a voluntary placement.. If you are happy then the people you are working with will be happy.
Have a little think and get back to me. Kathmandu is a very poor city and has isolated communities, there are places on the outskirts you can volunteer with that give you a rural feel without too much isolation. Also think about how skilled your english grammer is and how well you can teach others.
Email me personally and i will give you as much info. as possible, it can't all be covered here.
But again, well done for making such a brave and amazing decision, you won't regret it!!

Sorry, I dont know how to send you an email... well what your email address is, at least. I think that's what I want... to be in a rural area where I can understand very little, and learn how to speak and interact the "hard way" so-to-speak; to figure it out on my own without some guide holding my hand the entire way. I can deal with being frustrated, not having anyone English-speaking around to talk to. If you have any ideas, let me know. You can email me at pura_vida17@yahoo.com
Thanks!

Hi,

I want to go to Nepal for three weeks from July 31- August 21. The first 2 weeks, I would like to volunteer- something that involves hard physical labor- like building orphanages or something like that. I don't have your e-mail address, so can you please e-mail me at chk24@law.georgetown.edu?
Also, I would like to travel with someone as well. The last week, I would like to trek to Mr. everest base camp, but I don't want to do it alone- preferably a female, just to be safe. Where can I find travel buddies?

thanks

Hi chk207,
I am about to finish my graduation by coming May end and planning to go for a 2 month long trip to someplace near around Indo-Nepal boarder, I might as well put up in Nepal for a month or so to do some volunteer work which should involve either working with kids or something to do with taking care of the elders, however, I don't have any problem doing any other work other then my own prefered choice.
I would certainly like to trek along with you to Mt.Everest's Base Camp if you could tell me the required documents and the expences, if any.
Regards,
~Raj

Hey guys, trekking to everest base camp is one of the most fantastic experiences available.
Tour companies can bump up the price if you need the support of one. If you don't or you think that you'll only need a porter then let me know i can point you in the right direction. Plus, if you want to trek with people then plenty advertise in the local cafe's and bars for trekking partners, many are single travellers too!
