yes malaria pills do have some side effect if taken not in proper dose,
best thing is to have body cream applied on body or use of repelent.

Unfortunately malarial medication can have side effects as marianne points out. The level of risk will depend upon which part of Africa you visit. You should seek advice on the relevant medication for where you intend to travel as this can vary.

hii it is not very clear from your question as mari said before,whether you want to prevent malaria or you want to cure malaria.
in case you are suffering from malaria ,there is one medicine called "quinine" and it is very effictive.

preventative for Malaria.... the number one is DEET %27+. try using citron based lotions and cover up.
there are meds you can take depending on what your Dr. decides. When I travelled to Africa I used Larium with no side effects.
It also depends where your going, what your doing and how long your going to be there. If your gallavanting through the jungle the meds plus repellent is a good choice.
you won't really have to worry about mozzies if your resorting it or gallavanting through out the Sahara.
Other sites suggest that only a minority of users suffer from psychotic reactions, even suicide. Some lawsuites are running. The drugs againts malaria seem to get more complexer as most the classical ones have lost there effectiveness against the sickness, the parasite mutes itself (similar as to the influenza virus does). Our guide for Malawi has malaria for years, he could live with it but had one of his recurals while on the trip, bad experience too.
Non-medical prevention helps a lot too, also against regular bites;
- closing windows and doors when the house light is on
- wearing long sleeves/trousers when outdoors
- consuming a lot of garlic, chillis, rum and smoking (cause body smells)
- lotions like "TABARD" (I swear on it)
- best: use a fan or keep moving, mosquitos cann't detect your body heat

I definitely had side effects from lariam. When they were prescribed I was told to take one tablet in the week prior to our holiday, that week we were still at home. You take lariam once a week and for me the dise effects lasted for one week
I was short breathed, could not walk up two glights of steps without panting. But the worst things was that I felt nervou. The same feeling I had (many years ago) when I had to go for exams.. It lasted for one whole week and I dicided not to take lariam and was prescribed meflocine and paludrine, if I remember correctly.
We always take our own mosquito net and repellent with 50% DEET

I suggest you take doxy...it is cheap, there are no sideeffects, and you can jsut pick it up as you need it in local pharmacies around Africa. WEAR BUG SPRAY! USE A MOSQUITO NET! USE BUG SPRAY!!!! haha Use bugspray with lots of deet in it! that stuff helps alot!
