Leaving to Matzatlan on Sunday (jan 15) for a week. Got a good deal for $500cdn rtn. I realize that Matzatlan is the same as Cancun in the way of tourism so I plan to hop the bus and go whereever The area around Mazatlan is also agricultural so not to much to see.
Anyone travel the area as of late? What was your itinery? did you have trouble finding places to sleep? where did you stay?
right now I'm having trouble finding a hostel in Matzatlan adn I refuse to pay more than $20/night for a hotel.
any help on places to go would be appreciated.. I may be thinking of renting a car what do you think? are buses sufficient enough? I found out that you can get along just fine with them in the Yucatan Peninsula.

A hotel room for $20 will be hard to find in Mazatlan, but the good news is that Mazatlan is much, MUCH less touristy than Cancun, and much less expensive. It does not draw the heavy teenage/college crowd - they go directly across to Baja's Cabo San Lucas. Driving is fairy easy, so renting a car is not a bad idea, I wouldn't drive in the City though if it can be avoided. One thing you might consider is to catch a cheap boat ride or quick flight to LaPaz, which is not fair away. LaPaz is still a well kept secret. It is a small fishing village on the inside of the Baja Pennisula and is extremely charming. The rooms will be cheap. If you are not part of the drink 'till you drop crowd, you might be happier there.
There are several old Spanish Colonial towns nearby Mazatlan (as well as the old section of Mazatlan itself). There is also San Blas - a small section of rainforest which can be very cool to hike through. The ocean in Mazatlan is warm and the current is not overpowering, making it very swimable. If you dive, scuba is available - lots of eels, rays and sometimes turtles.
