The regulations for hand baggage has changed so drastically the last few years. In the 90's I carried a large sports bag onboard with all my heaviest articles, weighing more than my checked-in luggage! This is not allowed anymore. Your travel agent or the airline will give you the exact current limits, usually around 5kg and 60x40x30cm. Good airline websites give this info under their "baggage" or "F.A.Q." webpages. Funny, there seems never to be a weight limit how much one can take aboad stuffed in pockets or in duty-free carry-bags ;-)

"Durable"? Plastic bags are also OK for carry-on luggage. I now use a soft hikers "day pack" which I can sling over the shoulders if need, ramp corridors seem to be getting extreamly longer at airline hubs and big airports so handle and wheels on a small compact case are ideal!
