Hi Globies

I have two compact digital cameras, and (tried a few others) I want to invest now in DSLR, I was thinking of the Nikon D40X.
Do you have that camera, what do you think?
I want a camera with SD media cards, as Im using these already, and don t want to another format.

I read many good reviews on a few photographic websites, but would like to hear from truth worthy people: the Globosapiens!

Will it be wise to take it in poor countries? I never had problems while travelling, but do not want to bring myself attention. However I want to improve the quality of my photos.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi Isabelle

The Nikon D40 is a very good camera, small lightweight and handy. I have a D70 which is much bulkier but I prefer it like that.

I like Nikons and am happy with the photographic quality.

For the D40 there is one single thing that bothers me: the camera does not allow all possible F-mount Lens so you have to be careful what you buy. If you happen to own older lens you might not be able to use it.

What I like with my D70 is the perfect functionality you can adjust settings with the two wheels (front/back right) and buttons on the left. It's so easy and logical and fast. For this enhanced functionality I'd rather go for the D80 or perhaps a used D70(s).

My 2 cts

i just bought a Olympus E 510. there are some reasons that leads me to this camera.
- the image stabilizer is inside the camera, so you don't have to pay it with each lense like Nikon.
- the display can be used in 'live view' mode as known from compactcameras.
- very fast autofocus
- excellent sharpness and colour of Olympus lense
- best size for my fingers
i tried a lot of cameras the last months and important is the 'feeling' that grows in your hand by using different cameras. the weight, the design of the housing, positioning of the switches, the size of the camera especially for your fingers and at least the usermenue.
take care by buying foreign stuff, maybe its varying to local normallys and you can run into trouble in case of guarantee.
i guess all cameras made good pics, therefore forget the name and choose the one that is flattering your fingers.

best wishes and success,

thorsten

Hi Isabelle,

I have just bought Canon 400D. The previous model in the same series (350D) was much appreciated by users and there have been lots of favourable opinions. I have not tested all the functions of the camera, but I'm going to do it soon. For the time being I'm very pleased with the capabilities of this camera, especially with the quality of pictures. I read reveral reviews of cheaper DSLRs and usually it was Canon 400D which was winning the comparison with Nikon D40x or Sony A100. Canon also offers great possibilies of expandability in terms of lenses as all EF and EF-S lens are compatible with the camera (in D40x there are some lenses by Nikon that aren't compatible). The only disadvantage for you would be the fact Canon uses CF cards.

Best,
Adam
