I thought it would be fun to have a contest based on a specific theme each month...people could submit their pictures and you could have a separate voting section to judge the winners.
This would add a bit more challenge to the photo competition depending on what the theme was for that period. Some ideas:
Picture of Paradise
Best Architecture picture
Best Animal picture
Best Nature picture
Best cold-weather/warm-weather picture
Sunsets
etc...
It may also help to increase the quality of pics submitted to the site.

I agree Brian. that would motivate me more. Perhaps that could be done by spliting the section "pictures" into three categories;
- nature and landscape
- cities and structures
- people and culture
To explain, there are those three types of travelers; my brother is one who mainly takes pictures of beautiful scenery, flowers and fish (scuba-diver) on his trips, I on the otherhand like cities much more and the technical and historical stuff. Others, me too somewhat, travel to meet people and experience there cultures, so 90% of my pics have people in them! My photos cannot compete as landscapes because I take so little of them, relying on postcards and others to do that for me...
As far as I understand GLOBOsapiens is a "travel community" so main aspect of all our uploads therefore would or should be -----travel-----!
If you try to make a challenge with themed photography most of us would have to be relaying on older material (which most probably would already be uploaded). Just to go somewhere to make a pictrue for the contest is not really about traveling... There are quite a lot of sites already doing this monthly theme shot thing, these sites are about photography.
On the other hand if we had a special place/categorie/folder to put in competiton pictures and the one with the best voting gets first, this idea suits me too.
A way for such an idea would be:
- Upolad pics (for say a month) to a special folder
- Have them voted on the next month (like say, every member can make his
top ten list attribute 1 point for place ten and 10 point for place 1)
- Count the votes for each picture and then you got a result.
- The voting process should be hidden (and the photographers name too!!!) so
as not to influence other people.
The way to get this result seems quite fair to me:
- you only vote when you got all the entries
- you are not influenced by other peoples votes
- nor by the personal opinion you have about the poster
(i.e. "i don't want always the same person to win")
Perhaps this can lead us to something

This is exactly what I mean...I'm not suggesting we change the theme of the entire site...just a small variation on something that we are already doing.
We could absolutely use the pictures that people have already posted. People could submit the ones that they want to enter into this specific contest. I think the rules you have outlined in your post are quite fair.
