My past experience is that it takes upto 3 days for the various profile images to change yet my last changes January-March were pretty quick, actually instant!
It was once explained that for some images the browser gets the image from the "temporary internet files" on ones own hard disk instead of fetching the new ones, to save time. Those local files should be deleted occasionaly.
