Does someone have any recommendations for exciting things to do in Cairns? We’re planning on going there in June/July 2006. I plan to dive or snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef and maybe visit the rainforest and some of the surrounding islands of Cairns. Is it worth taking the rainforest sky rail or the flying leap hang-gliding? Any useful experiences for me? Thanks!

Personally I think that you need to do a minimum 2 or 3 night boat trip to really see the best of the Reef. This allows you to visit more remote and less crowded dive sites. Two of my most memorable dives was one where we were just on the edge of the continental shelf with the blue abyss on one side & the edge of the reef on the other and the 2nd was a night dive. If you have never dived this is the place to do it and become certified.Cairns itself has a lovely area down on the waters edge to just chill and the town itself has some great restaurants and nightclubs - try the Mad Cow! Hire a car and take the drive along the coast to Port Douglas this is one of the most scenic drives that you can do. Green Island is the main island off Cairns it hosts hoardes of daytrippers though. If you can get to the Whitsundays, do it - you have 74 islands to choose from, priced from bare bones to luxury and much cheaper than Cairns.
Good luck! Kerrie
