I am currently looking into daypacks which do not look like they are holding a camera for security reasons and if you go into poor countries to not create attention and wired feelings.
So I came around the Tamarec Backpack:

Does anybody have experience with that, or similar, backpacks on your travels? Looks like a great daypack to me.
thank you for the link. The backpack looks just great. I do prefere the camoflage since it is "unscheinbarer" (not so visible).
The only thing which keeps me from buying now is that I am not sure if the Model 6 is better since it is 200g less in weight. Might be enough for my purpose. The 7 contains enough space for an big flash.
Oh.. and of course I have to get the SLR first :-) I am looking into the 400d with an adtional EF-L USM 4,0/70-200 CPS lens. That should fit into the 6 as well.. hmmm not so sure... :-)

I see and when you get your SLR then you might be adding more lenses a tripod and other stuff later and then you haven't got enought space with the 6...
The 400D sure is a good Camera, I didn't like it because it's too small and doesn't fit my hand ergonomics. And if you put the 70-200mm on you migh have problems keeping it stil.
Ergonomics, sturdyness and functionality were the main reasons I decided for a Nikon D70.
Go into a shop and hold them in your hand and have the big lens put on and then you'll find out for yourself.
The dslr-forum.de sure would have loads of infos on Camera and Lenses... ;-)

you are right the space will be to small over time. I always just thought about traveling with it, it would replace my daypack which I always do carrie on the front, while my huge backpack is on the back (would look funny the other way around :-) ), so I definately nead the extra space above the camera equipment! Another thing I have not thought off, is the power supply unit for the camera and my small camera as well.
I will go for the 7 :-)
About the Nikon, I favour the Canon since I realy love the look and feel by canon cameras. I know this is not the most important part, but one of the important things for myself. However, I will have a look at the Nikon in the shop. The weight is also a very important criteria for me. Travel ligth is my motto, and taking a DSLR with me is a huge step compared to my IXUS V3 at the moment :-) The Canon is 90 gramm lighter and a bit smaller. But you are right, one has to hold it in the hand to make a judgement.
At the moment the weight comes down to about:
camera: 590 gramm
rucksack: 1020 gramm
extra lens: 1000 gramm
lens: about 300 gramm
2 batterie packs: about 300 gramm
power supply: about 200 gramm
memory cards and other small extras: about 300 gramm
Total: about 3.5 Kg. That's quit a lot to carry around :-) Well at least it keeps you fit ;-)

I have the version 6 with a 350d and a couple of lens. A bit of a squeeze but not too bad, but little space for non camera stuff. IN hindsight would go for the 7.
