Travel by Air or Ship around Asia

Since I am a college student, I am planning on doing it as cheaply as possible. My question is, how expensive is it to travel by air around Southeast Asia? How long would it take to travel by boat between those countries? Please reply if you have an answer to any or all of my questions, or if you just have advice. I also found this link that shows all the low cost carriers in Asia http://www.attitudetravel.com/lowcostairlines/asia/byairline.html I think you would find the countries you are planning to visit a little too far apart to travel between by boat unless you have a considerable amount of time. I would take Airasia to KL or Jetstar/Adam Air to SGP from Denpassar then continue to Penang on land.
