HEEYYYY THERE!!!
I'm travelling to India by myself too... It will sure be quite an experience. I'll be gonig to Chandigarh (I read bout it, how Cool is it?!!!), Delhi, Dehra Dun, and of course I can't miss out on Bollywood and to anywhere where I can take photos!!! it will be quite an experience!!!. I want to travel all around by train BACKPACKER style (and budget :( [big frown])...
As for vol work, I do some work where I live. I really wanna check out a place called Raphael Ryder Cheshire in Dehra D. Sounds cool, apparently the Indian prime minister went there....so it sounds like a cool place to go to. But there are also other places and causes I want to visit, like helping elephants, and assisting disabled patients around South India. More bout me, I love music, can't go anywhere without my CD player, have really long (an enviable, mum's jealous) jet black hair (goes down to my belly button), and have a nose piercing (it didn't hurt), and no tattoos, maybe I could get some henna while I'm there??? Just in case you're worried, I am not gothic, and I have a queer brother who lives in Nimbin, so I try to visit him whenever I can. I am vegeterian and hate cruelty to animals. GRRRRRRR. MAkes me mad. Tell me, what are your plans and I'll see if we can clash together!!! If it bothers you, I AM HYPER, and I get excited all the time!!! :-)
Well gonna walk the animal shelter's dogs, so toodles!!!

hii pecanpie,
wish you a very memorable and easy time in india.
well chandighar and dehradoon is very nice place.
dehra doon is wonderful.
when you go to dehradoon ,do try to visit the rishikesh that to during evening time at the river ganga banks ,its really wonderful.
also at dehra doon there is a temple where you can get 100% guranteed stones .mussori is also excellent.

I travelled the globe alone with no problems, much of this in Thailand. I was in Nepal last year and encountered no problems.
It would be wise to check the current situation in Nepal after the King's announcement last week which has resulted in the government being sacked. The situation seems unstable and i guess there will be even more nationwide bhands (strikes), which will make travel more difficult.
The continuing Maoist problems may also escalate.
www.fco.gov.uk has up to date travel advice.

Enjoy it while you can!

i agree with mag,at least the situation in nepal is not favourable for tourist,so for safety reasons one should avoid going there till things become normal.
