According to globetrotters.co.uk, the US authorities introduced restrictions for carrying batteries in checked in and hand luggage for flights. Lithium batteries, which are not in their original packaging or in a separate resealable plastic bag and in quantities exceeding two, are not allowed. Loose lithium batteries are not allowed in checked bags either.
[For all of us, who take many pictures this is very bad news, indeed. I take at least 12 loose lithium batteries for my large camera...]

I fly at least three times a month in the US and have never had a problem. Because I manage construction and need to photograph progress, I carry a camera and a spare lithium battery at all times. Like most countries, if you travel with a laptop, it needs to be taken out and scanned separately. Shoes have to come off and be scanned as well. The process isn't anything out of the ordinary.
