Hi - is there someone who can chat with me about traveling by TRAIN? Should I buy rail passes in the US? For 4 days, it is $225 (US). What would a local pay to ride the train from Stuttgart to Salzburg, for example?

Hi Jackie,
it is not mandatory to buy rail passes in the US. Getting train-tickets is easy more or less - if the ticket mashine or the railway official have a good day :-) ...
But all jokes asside: I'm not having a general idea wich kinds of special tickets like x-day passes are available. But I know that there are different prices for the same run depending on how early you book your ticket (early = cheap). For example: If you book today your ticket Stuttgart-Salzburg to go tomorrow, they'll charge you € 62,--; if you buy it today to go on February 16, the lowest price would be € 29,--. These special prices are limited to a specified number of tickets - the early bird catches the worm.
To get a picture of it have a look at www.db.de/site/bahn/en/start - it's the website of the 'Deutsche Bundesbahn'.
Enjoy your stay in Germany - and have in mind that not only the south of Germany is worth a visit.
