my friend and i want to travel for a few months in southeast in spring 2007.
we are currently thinking of doing volunteer work in one country for a period of time to begin with. then moving on to see other parts of the region.
what sort of volunteer opportunities exist that are really worthwhile AND affordable?

Hello, I think I can help you. I am Hong Kong people who volunteered in Australia few years ago and I know that people can volunteer in China, Hong Kong and Japan, are you interested in such places? How long will you volunteer and how much is your budget? Generally they just provide you food and accommodation only.

There's so many volunteering opportunities out there!!

Pick your country and maybe I could help you out better, it also depends on the type of volunteering you want to do ie. teaching, conservation, pastoral care etc..

My one piece of advice is stay well clear of 'organisations' that charge you a fee to 'volunteer'. Bunch of crooks the lot of them!

Would you risk it, for a biscuit?

hi there, 20 yr old from canada, also lookin to do some volunteer work in SE asia for a few weeks, looking towards Thailand / Philippines in 2007. I've got my teaching english overseas certificate, and am interested in teaching english, orphanage assistance, any projects that i can get involved with in a community. I've fell accross many organizations online, but they charge an F load of money for something that someone wants to do for other ppl in good will... Any local organizations that DONT charge a huge dime , and will take in foreigners for volunteer work in the Thailand / Philippines region in exchange for accomodation?

I'm also involved in a job right now that includes being a support worker for developmentally disabled individuals so i dont know if that would be something that people would consider when looking for volunteer workers.
