I'm off to Thailand (today!) and will be in the South in a week or two. Was planning on doing my PADI in Ko Tao, but apparently it's the wet season in the south east at the moment. Does that mean you can't really learn? Will the waters be annoyingly misty? How bad is it exactly in the wet season? Should I go to the west coast (Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta etc) instead? What's the weather there like at the moment?

The typhoon and rainy season peak around August to September, so the worst is over. In October you can expect 50-60% of rainy days in the south. Use these days to get your theory on diving and pool tests done.
See also www.weather.cnn.com for quite accurate (ive learned) predictions. Doesn't look good next week!
www.climate-zone gives averages for cities of the world, says Puket 45% rainy days for October!

I guess you should not worry too much about what season it is when this is the first time you are going to dive...
Instead: worry about quality of the PADI school, teachers, etc. you are getting.
(serious) Learning in bad weather is only to your advantage; anyone can dive in 28 degr. celcius water, without surge or swell an a visibility of 20 meters... It gets a lot harder if you can only see 30 cm in front of you.
