Hi Globies
Do you have any experience how attractive can be Tokyo
in January? Cold and grey?
I have been there in summer in the past...
Now Tokyo seems to be involuntary stop on my route... Worth to stop? Or maybe to visit the south of Japan (looks expensive!).
I'll apprecciate your suggestions!
Thanks
Wojtek

I guess it depends on what you mean by cold. Coming from Poland, Tokyo will be quite a bit warmer, say +5 on average would be my guest, with little or no snow. I lived about 100 km from Tokyo and only had snow three times in two years. You likely won't need more than a fleece and long sleeve shirt to stay comfortable.

Tokyo, being the massive metropolis it is, is grey pretty much all year long. But there is plenty to see. Meiji Shrine is interesting all year long (except for the first week of January when it's packed with people for New Year's celebrations). the Fish Market is worth seeing too. Check out my Tokyo report and see what there is to see and do.

When you say southern Japan, do you mean Kyushu or Okinawa? Both will be nice (say +15 - +20 on an average day) with plants in bloom, but odds are the beaches will be closed/deserted. To get to either of those from Tokyo will require a moderately expensive flight (say about $600 US or so).

If you have any more specific questions, I'm glad to answer what I can.
