From Lake Argentina looking at Calafate
From Lake Argentina looking at Calafate
Calafate is a small tourist town in southern Patagonia Argentina and Perito Moreno is a glacier with easy access to see it calving whether on land or by boat. Calafate also has bus connections to great hiking in nearby El Chalten and Torres del Paine in Chile. There are also expensive horse rides and rafting trips.

Favourite spots:
Lake Argentina on the way to Perito Moreno
Lake Argentina on the way to Perito Moreno
The marshy area on Lago Argentina with great numbers and variety of birds to see. You can also pay to go into bird refuge to see the same birds.

What's really great:
Parque de los Glacieres
Parque de los Glacieres
Glacier Perito was the highlight of the trip to Calafate and the justification for the town's tourist popularity. The amazing moaning and loud cracks which sounded like lightening, and then the ice would fall into the lake with a huge BOOM, making this an incredible aural as well as visual experience! I cannot recommend it too much!

The town of El Chalten is around 4 hours by bus north of Calafate, which is close by Patagonian distances. El Chalten is a very popular destination for hiking and climbing with mountains and glaciers. Some describe the mountains as being very similar to Chile's Torres del Paine. From Calafate, there are also many tours available including; horseback riding excursions from nearby Estancias, ice walking tours on Glacier Perito Moreno, and ferry rides up close to the glacier.

Accommodations:
Calafate travelogue picture
Calafate is very popular and the prices are more than twice as expensive as the rest of Argentina. I stayed in the very noisy annex of someone's home without any heating. Basic lodging was asking a uniform U$S15 a night for a private room. A bed is a dorm was about U$S6-8.

Restaurants:

I bought sandwiches, fruit, etc. at the grocery stores. The restaurant prices seemed outrageous compared to the prices I was used to in the rest of Argentina, where I had been traveller for two months at this point. There were three good grocery stores with slightly inflated prices, but with a nice selection of prepared sandwiches, etc. for backpackers.
