welcome to the beautiful city of south africa... beaches and mountains, food and people..
Famous as the lazy city of South Africa and having a climate with seasons though much warmer than NZ!! Cape Town is really special! Slightly americanised, but altogether Africa. Cape Town host's a really vibrant population of malay, african and white settlers.. each with their own cuisine!
Favourite spots:
Table Mountain must be walked~ there is a cable car for those who can't manage the trek, but to choose one of the many trails and climb it is amazing. Yoou can't see dung beetle in a wire cage!! For another spectacular walk by which to view the city and ocean (try this one in early twilight) walk 'Lions Head'. Less strenuous walk up a conical mound where the view is gorgeous - there are some areas requiring climbing though..
What's really great:
walking around the urban neighbourhoods, Boe Kaap is the malay quarter near downtown. mosques and vertical streets. Try some spicy boerwors or sour figs from the small local stores
Accommodations:
I'm not too sure about in the city, but backpackers are usually a cheap option with large dorms and sometimes basic cooked fare..
Nightlife:
Dockside - close to Canal Walk. avoid if not in highschool...
Other recommendations:
Franschoek - home of the French colonial settlers to the region. Amazing architecture to be seen just driving around, sample chocolate from the belgian chocolatier, the floral monument for some historical vibes.
Stellenbosch - fascinating quaint 'Oom Samie se Winkle' shop/museum. buy their syrupy koeksusters!!
Yzerfontein - the quintessential Afrikaans experiance - for a girls wanting to escape the english-dominated city. Travel north of Cape Town towards Namibia up the flattest, straightest road imaginable. Visit the local bar: 'Die Stal', after a day's surfing on the endless beach. for some back in time afrikaans culture!!
