The Land of Tom Sawyer

Hannibal is the home of Samuel Clemons (Mark Twain), a famous author of the 19th century. His books included adventures about Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn. The town is located on a bend of the Mississippi River in northeartern Missouri.

My wife and I traveled to Hannibal to enjoy the International Samuel Clemons Festival, held every year during the week July 4. We enjoyed participating in the activities and the craft fair that is held as a part of the attraction. Other activities include a mud volleyball tornament, fence painting contest, carnival, frog jumping contest, and musical entertainment. The town is replete with historical homes, a beautiful stretch of scenic river, and tourist attractions.

Favourite spots:
Lover's leap and Hannibal, MO

One of my favorite locations in the area was a visit to the famous lover's leap. This location allows you to view the river and city from the bluffs. Another nice attraction is the MarK Twain Cave. This naturally occurring cave has many flowstone formations that have developed over millions of years.

What's really great:
Tom Sawyer's fence and the Mark Twain home

There is so much to include about Hannibal that the space allotted does not give justice. Visiting the tourist spots, such as Tom Sawyer's fence, Becky Thatcher's house, the old jail, Indian Joe's cave, and Molly Brown's home helped to pass the time between the events of the festival, which was our original intention for the trip.

Sights:

Mark Twain homestead

Becky Thatcher's House - the home of Twin's friend, from whom he modeled the character of Becky Thatcher

Molly Brown's birthplace and home - the birthplace and home of the Unsinkable Molly Brown, a historic figure who survived the sinking of the Titanic

Mark Twain Cave

Accommodations:
A variety of hotels ( Day's Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Super 8, Howard Johnson, and Tavellodge - among others) is available. There are at least 15 Bed and Breakfast facilities, including the Dubach Inn, a restored inn from 1870.

Restaurants:
The Golden Corral Restaurant has a wonderful beffet taht includes salad, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, and steaks. My wife and I found this to be a wonderful value (less than $10 USD per person).

Main Street Soda Fountain - a restored soda fountain from 1906. This place has all of the accoutrements that are familiar with the type of establishment.

Bubba's - this is a typical river town diner that features cajun food, barbeque, catfish, and steaks.
