Hermann, Missouri is a historical city in the United States. The German Cultural Society of Philadelphia was unhappy that many people from that country were losing their language and customs in the new country of the United States. They formed a committee that eventually purchased land bordering the Missouri River. The wild grapes and the land resembled the native land bordering the Rhine River in Germany. More than 11,000 acres were purchased to begin the settlement. The German culture is evident in almost every facet of this community. We were able to visit during a traditional Maifest and see some of the wonderful wineries of the area.

Stone Hill Winery is a highly awarded vineyards. They have won many local, national, and international awards. A tour of the facilities is available for $1.50.

| What's really great: |

My wife and I enjoyed visiting during the Maifest. This tradition has enjoyed more than 130 years in Hermann. There are activities along the streets, a live German band, activities in the park, and festivities at many of the local businesses. We visited the historic German School Museum and saw relics of life in the 1800's. There are exhibits from the school, a collection of antique furniture, dolls, and other artifacts from the beginning of the town.

Stone Hill Winery - tours of the facilities and wine-tasting are available.
Hermannhof Winery - the wines grown at this vineyards are different than those of Stone Hill. A tour of these facilities is available, also. Wine-tasting can be such a wonderful experience on a leisurely afternoon.

Birk's Gasthaus - a wonderful bed-and-breakfast has rooms available for rent. In addition, they have special weekends in which the guests participate in a murder mystery. Rooms begin at about $65 USD.

Hermann Brewing Company - This is a wonderful restaurant/pub with a microbrewery. The local beers and lcal wines are excellent, as is the food.
