Istanbul travelogue picture
By far, the most amazing city I have visited in everyway. Istanbul has something for people of all interests. The architecture is dumbfounding, history among the oldest in the world, culture has survived plagues after wars after natural disasters. This city holds a complete sensory shock. If you are traveling as a woman, never be alone, but for the most part, Istanbul is safe for backpackers and high- rollers. One can stay in dirt cheap hostels to The Four Season in Sultanhamet (Blue Mosque area). Shopping galore, traditional tobacco smoking, football/soccer matches, art, museums, cruising the sea, photography, anything and everything you can imagine is here.

Favourite spots:

Sultenhamet. The area of the Blue Mosque. This is perhaps the best area to get aquainted with Istanbul. Very inexpensive hostels here (from 5 dollars a night to as much as you want!) with food venues everywhere. Not far from the covered bazaar which is a lot of fun (watch pick-pockets). Easy 20 min. walk to the sea and also lit up enough around the area to walk and feel safe.

What's really great:

I particularly liked the variety of food snacks along the road. Little pizza rolls, big steak sandwiches, etc. Enjoy sitting and relaxing while you smoke tobacco from the water pipes as the world goes by. Watching the sun set over Aye Sophie and the Blue Mosque. Unforgettable.

Sights:
Walk along the Bosporus from the Asian to the European side. Get lost on the streets and throw your map away.

Accommodations:
The area of Sultenhamet is the best. Reservations are not necessary...cheapest of all levels.
