Kompong Thom travelogue picture
Was in a minivan heading to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap when I decided to leave the bus in the town of Kompong Thom. Another person also got off at this stop so we both headed across the street to Arunas GH. Good place. Kompong Thom is small and doesn't see the volume of visitors like PP & Siem Reap. First night we just explored the town area. The main excitement was at the street market. Everyone was there. Ate at a restaurant below the GH. Food was good there as well as the coffee. That night we were recruited to visit an English class. The kids were great! Next day we hit Sambor Prei Kuk, 7th century ruins and Phnom Suntonk a hilltop temple. Both are nice and deserve a visit. Sambor Prei Kuk is just now having some restoration work starting. Saw no other visitors while there. Take a moto everywhere like elsewhere in Cambodia. Seemed like a safe enough place but obvious massage activity going on all around. The English teacher arranged a local truck for us to take to PP. $2 US

Favourite spots:
Sitting on the balcony, walkway at the GH looking out onto the street activity at night. The outdoor markets set up on the streets in the early evening. Sambor Prei Kuk. Phnom Suntonk. Restaurant below the GH with awesome coffee

What's really great:
Riding on the back of the motos along all the school children leaving classes for the day. Having a drink under an umbrella from a hawker at dusk. (watch the mosquito's!) Enjoying a glass of sugar palm juice Sitting in with the English class for 2 nights.

Sights:
Sambor Prei Kuk...7th century ruins
Phnom Suntonk...Hilltop Temple, nice views from top
Just riding on the back of the moto through the countryside.

Accommodations:
Arunas GH...No 46 Sereipheap Blvd...062 961 238
$3/night, clean, fan, cw, cable, double bed, nice outside balcony/walkway

Restaurants:
Arunas Restaurant below the GH. Packed in the morning and evening with locals. Good coffee and food.
Sugar Palm juice from the hawkers

Other recommendations:
Evening market in the center of town. Lots of fresh fish.
Go visit an English class and meet some local kids. They have loads of questions.
