Mexico Distrito Federal travelogue picture
On one hand this is the largest, highest, dirtiest and polluted city on earth.
But on the other it is also one of the most fascinating and history packed places that you will ever come across. Mexico City is a sprawling mega-metropolis. In the city and around there are so many different sites to be seen that it it really is worth visiting at least once.
I have been here twice and both times have never managed to see everything that I have wanted to see.

Favourite spots:

My personal favourites both in the city and it's surrounds are as follows: 1. National Museum of Anthropology - DO NOT MISS THIS. Not only is it huge it is jam packed with some fantastic pieces of history. The most important would have to be the original Aztec Calendar. Check out where the face in the centre has been worn away due to the people throwing stones at it as they walked past as it was thought to be evil.
2. Teoteohuacan - the ancient pyramids nearby. The largest, "The Pyramid of the Sun" is connected to the smaller "Pyramid of the Moon" by an ancient walkway.
3. The Church of Guadalupe - The devout still come on their knees to this church where over 400 years ago an apparition appeared to a shepherd telling him to build a church on this site. When he asked for proof to show the Bishop an image appeared on his cloak of the Virgin. Consequently a church was built on the spot and as the original one began sinking there is now a new, modern church as well as the old.

What's really great:

It is still possible to see the original cloak under glass from a moving walkway. What no-one can explain is how the cloak has survived for 100's of years as the cactus fibre it appeared on normally only lasts for 20 - 30 years. I am not religious but it is a pretty special place!
4. Mexico's main Plaza de Armas boasts one of the largest flags in the world. Plus government house has the most spectacular mural by Diego Rivera showing the history of the Mexico in picture form beginning with the Aztec's, the Spanish conquest & then their more recent history. As you move the eyes of the subjects appear to follow you. On the other side is the site where the Aztec Calendar was found. You can still walk through this.
5.Xochimilco - these waterways are the remains of the original capital Tenochtitlan and are still in use.
6.Mariachi Square - this is whre the musicians hang around waiting for a paying customer so as to serenade you. Go in the day and leave valuables at home.

Accommodations:

There are all levels of accommodation to suit all budgets.
If you have just flown in the altitude will make it hard to sleep so don't pick somewhere too traditonal like where we did. If the layout has a central staircase totally open from the bottom through to the top of the hotel and then with narrow rooms leading off; avoid it. They really are an echo chamber with all noises (personal and otherwise) being heard making it impossible to sleep.
If you wish to see the major sites stay around the centre, it's not that pretty and not as safe but handy.
If you are after the nightlife and wish to be more upmarket choose a hotel in the Zona Rosa, this is the trendy area.

Other recommendations:

Do not under any circumstance take one of the green or yellow Volkswagon VW's. They are not licensed and many people are robbed and then left all the time.
Pay the extra and choose a yellow taxi or a limousine for your own safety.

A very short report for one of the biggest (normal) cities on earth. If you did not like it, you won't MOST multi-million-metropoles around the world. Noise, choas, dust, smell, poverty, criminality, struggle is the way of the day. Rather find much more positive aspects to a report, every + a jewel. Living in Mexico City is about how the conditions of 95% of metropolitan people around the whole world live in! Also, GLOBOheaders not used properly. Nice pictures tho'

A great report. You really do get around. I enjoy any travel in Mexico or South America, so keep the stories coming. Russ (Bear)
