A wonderful place to visit...so much to see and do! Whether you spend 1 day or 1 week you will only scratch the surface of this international city! So many cultures and so much to do!
An all day fun pass purchased at the metro(subway) staion for $7.00 will work until 3 am on all buses and subways in the city...if you plan to ride more than 3 times in a day do this! Manhattan is such a unique city.... Battery Park at the bottom, Chinatown, Greenwich part way up and Midtown with Empire State Building, Macy's, Times Square, Fifth Avenue and Central Park. Beside Coney Island in Brooklyn is Brighton Beach which is a Russian settlement since the 1980's complete with an international market. Korean Town is on 32nd to 34th Street between 5th Avenue and Broadway.
Favourite spots:
Central Park...especially on Saturdays is alive with people. Macy's... a wonderful shopping experience.. 100 years in the same building with some of the same wooden escalators. Battery Park with the Sphere from the WTC and views of the Statue Staten Island Ferry, a FREE ride past the Statue of Liberty Brooklyn Bridge, a nice walk across...head out from City Hall... the facade of City Hall was not finished originally because it was thought that New York would not continue any farther North! Chinatown.. a unique shopping experience in food and other wares, also the larges settlement of Chinese outside of China. Times Square... CROWDED weekend evenings, ride the Ferris Wheel in Toys 'R Us Fifth Avenue... walk down and experience it from 59th to 40th for world famous stores. NBA store... only on in the world. Grand Central Station... an awesome building, excellent food court, enjoy the cheesecake.
What's really great:
Brighton Beach is a really unique experience to feel Russian outside of Russia, people speak and signs are in Russia, the M&T International Market has a fantastic cafe on the 2nd floor for some great Russian food. MY FAV budget hotel is Super 8 Times Square between 5th and 6th Avenue on 46th Street...just around the corner from the NBC studio at Rockerfeller Center. American Girl place is neat to see the hairstylists working on the dolls, Cafe on the top floor is quite unique. Just plan to spend time walking around Manhattan and enjoying the city!
Sights:
Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Rockerfeller Center, St Patrick's Cathedral, Grand Central Station, Central Park, New York Public Library.... so much to see
Accommodations:
Super 8 Times Square for the best budget Hotel.
Pennsylvania Hotel is across from Madison Square Garden and has some really nice rooms and some not so nice rooms, it's great for groups.
Restaurants:
We never go to eat but we do like Gallagher's on 52nd St between 7th and 8th.. go before 3 pm for $20 power lunch specials that gives you soup or salad, entree and dessert (cheesecake for us)
