I managed a brief trip to Philadelphia and found it in general to be an enjoyable city to visit. It is fairly scenic, with lots of interesting and historic old buildings and an impressive skyline. For me the city, know as the birthplace of our independence, seems to conveys more of a sense of history than Washington DC, perhaps owing to what the city represents more than how it visually appears. I’d have to say that there were some areas that I passed through that didn’t feel safe at all, which made me thankful for car door locks and the advantage of forward velocity and got me thinking that I would feel safer with my 10mm and two spare magazines at arm’s reach.

Favourite spots:
The main attractions covered in the visit were the Liberty Bell Pavilion and the Old City Hall (Independence Hall was closed for maintenance so we only saw and photographed the exterior.) I was quite impressed with the spoken presentation of the history of the bell and couldn’t help but feel a tinge of renewed patriotism as I listened to the speaker. Likewise, the presentation given at the Old City Hall, the first headquarters for the US Supreme Court was very informative. The plaza adjacent to City Hall makes for an enjoyable stroll amid statues, large shade trees and examples of early American architecture.

What's really great:
The promenade along the Schuylkill River was very enjoyable, especially on a balmy summer evening. The view of old buildings artfully illuminated by strategically placed spotlights and the reflection of the bridge and city lights on the river made for a pleasant walk. That night there was a rather burly gentleman showing off his large albino Burmese python (hey, if that’s what he wants to call it…just kidding!) and letting kids pet it and have pictures taken with it, until it got a bit worked up and he ended the exhibition for fear of snake bite-induced law suits.

Sights:
Philly has a somewhat smallish Chinatown if you need a dim sum fix or some wind chimes, bamboo flutes, old coins, crystals or a Bagua mirror for a Feng Shui fix.

Restaurants:
Besides independence, Philadelphia is also the birthplace of the Philly cheese steak and its second cousin the Philly chicken steak. There was a great Korean barbecue restaurant but the name and location of it escapes me (…and that’s no bul-gogi.)
