I stayed in Prince Rupert a few days before catching the Inside Passage BC Ferry south. It rained off and on constantly when I was there. It has an attractive natural setting which few cities in the world can match.
Near the tourist office
Prince Rupert is a small city, or a big town whose industries include an active port, tourism, and fishing. Ferries come and go to the Queen Charlotte Islands, Port Hardy, and Alaska. There are a variety of tours available to see local wildlife, or go fishing, but the prices are not geared for backpackers, solo tourists, and people who do not make reservations in advance.
Favourite spots:
Temperate Rainforest along a trail
The area next to the marina north of town. The setting is similar to a fjord with steep forested mountains rearing out of deep black water.
What's really great:
Eagles
I enjoyed hiking the trails near town. There are two trails in town as well as some trails into the forested mountains just outside of town. They go through some lush rainforests, and I saw five eagles at one time on a mud bar in a lake.

Queen of the North
I took the Inside Passage ferry south to Port Hardy from Prince Rupert. The scenery was mostly a gorgeous combination of forested snowcapped mountains, and dark grey ocean. We also saw killer whales, dolphins, log flumes, and a lighthouse.
Accommodations:
Pioneer Hostel
I stayed at the Pioneer Hostel, which I think is the only hostel in town. It has nice clean recently refurbished private rooms. It also provided free internet and transport to the ferry terminal. There are also a great variety of hotels in the Prince Pupert area and a campground near the ferry terminal.

I used the kitchen in the hostel where I stayed. It had all the expected appliances and dishes and utensils. There are a couple of groceries stores in town. There were normal fast food chains in town like Tim Hortons, McDonalds, and A&W as well as more the expensive restuarants where you are expected to tip more than money than you pay for the meal at a fast food place. I had recently returned from a trip to South America so the prices for easting out in Canada shocked me.
Hi Daniel, thank you for your report on Prince Ruperet, where I once have been when a backpacker could pay for a decent meal in a restaurant. I am off to Mayne Islnd, BC next week. I hope my money will make it.

I liked the report... It refreshens my memory, I was there some 6 years ago and had the same weather... The inside passage was amazing when I read the passage about it I don't think you liked it as much as I did, but it must have been due to the weather we had a great day with bright blue sky and plenty of sunshine!
