Manhattan of the Low Countries

Rotterdam travelogue picture
Manhattan of the Low Countries, an appropriate name for Rotterdam. Standing on Erasmus Suspension Bridge the skyline is varied and impressive, a mixture of skyscrapers and more moderate buildings. At night they are floodlit and even more impressive. ‘Witte Huis’, White House, stands out. Once it was the tallest building with its 45 floors. It dates back to 1898 and one of the few buildings which survived the 1940 bombing raid

Favourite spots:
The panoramic view from the Euromast, originally built for an international flower show, it is now a ‘Space Tower’. Superfast lifts take you to two platforms. 158 metre high. It is the nearest you get to the sensation of being rocket launched. On clear days you can see the North Sea and Rotterdam Docks. The illuminated skyline when standing on Erasmus Bridge.

What's really great:

Close to the train station Weena, the name of a street, with architecturally interesting skyscrapers. Weenatoren, Weena Tower, 13 floors of offices and the top 18 floors apartments with a view. Delftse Poort, 150 m, and the tallest building in the Netherlands. It is the seat of National Nederlanden, an insurance company. Millennium Tower, built in imitation of New York’s Empire State building. It houses Rotterdam’s most luxurious hotel: Westin Hotel

Sights:

Netherlands Architecture Institute an interestingly designed building which houses the largest architecture collection the world.

Next door Sonneveld House designed by architects Brinkman & van de Vlugt, famous for their design of Feyenoord Stadium. It was built in 1933 for Mr Sonneveld, a wealthy manufacturer. The house is spacious, daylight pours in through the many windows. It is furnished with tubular period furniture. The colour scheme is striking: bright green and orange, bronze and beige.

Accommodations:
cheapest place:
NIJC City Hostel, dormitories for 4-6-8 persons, communal showers. A fully equipped kitchen and if you don’t feel like preparing your own meal you can order meals in the downstairs City Cafe.

Most expensive
Westin Hotel which occupies the first 14 floors of the Millennium Tower, opposite Rotterdam Centraal Station. The millennium Tower is 149 m. high, only one metre lower than Rotterdam’s tallest building: Delftse Poort.

Restaurants:

Lijnbaan, a shopping mall built in 1953, known as Europe’s 5th Avenue. All shops have two floors, second floor holds the stock and administrative offices, no residential apartments. Very revolutionary in the 1950s.

The Beurstraverse, half subterranean shopping mall was opened 1996, nicknamed ‘the shopping gutter’. It gives easy access to the department stores Bijenkorf, Vroom & Dreesmann and Hema.

Here you will find all Dutch chain stores and no shortage of cafes and restaurants.

Other recommendations:

Stadhuis, Town Hall, an imposing building which withstood the bombing in 1940. The central hall is open to the public on weekdays.

Cube Houses curious architecture. The entrance to the house is by way of a narrow staircase in the trunk or pole of the house. The living quarters are in the cube itself. The cube seems to be tilted and placed on the pole resting on one points. There are three floors, shaped in a triangle. The walls are slanting. Downstairs is the living room and kitchen and a study. On the second floor bedroom and bathroom and the top floor, shaped as a pyramid, another room, with splendid views, the best place of the whole house. The downstairs rooms are fairly dark, the windows are small and there are not many. There are 38 of these houses and their selling price is 200.000 euros.
Kijk-Kubus number 70 is open to the public.
