first forthnight of july, i visited Samos wiht a bunch of friends. We arrived by boat at Karlovase port and stayed in small beachvillage Kampos, partly in a small lodge, partly in a hotel, which was fun!
Beachvillages Kampos and Armos are located in the southeast of the island. Very windy place it was, which we didn't mind, because it was a welcome cool down from the heat (every day +35°C). I would discribe those villages as typically tourist areas, lost of restaurants which all serve the same food. Only small hotels, hardly any clubs or other large venues, which make it a cosy quiet place, no drunken hordes at night, lost of children and elderly people who just enjoy nice wheater.
Favourite spots:
As i'm dutch speaking, i liked the dutch bar. don't think i've ever know the name, but you can't miss it, because of all the orange. the owner is a really cool greek who likes to show of with his sunglasses or dutch swarewords. don't mistake it for the Parrots Club, which is dutch to, but seems always closed, so didn't went in. The actual pride of Samos are the hills and mountains. We did a climb in a mountain river all the way up waterfalls in nicely cool bright water. spectacular. afterworhts you can have a café frappé on top of a mountain with a great view over the northeast part of the island. this river is east to Karlovasi port, at the very end of the road.
What's really great:
We went paintball shooting in the mountains in the center of the island, where the windturbines are. Great spot, very large area with cool hidding places, much bush and large rocks. really enjoyed that. Also the village of Pythagoria in the southwest is beautifull. It has a small castlle which you can visit, and a lovely youthharbour. if you like shopping, you'll be off for several hours in the small streets of the old town. Big plus, no offending architecture at all, no concreet, not much traffic. Ideal for some romance, little Monaco!
Accommodations:
i stayed several days in a small beach house, which was property of a greeck acquintance. Very cosy, but the sewers allways jammed after one shower. We moved to a small hotel, Called Sofi, allong the Kambos main coastway, runned by a very nice family. Pretty old hotel, but nice pool, friendly service and airco (which you had to pay extra 30euro, bugger).
After paintballshooting, i wasted my last bermudas, but the hotel managers wife was so sweet the wash them for my. That's service!
Her son runs the beach bar, his name is Vasilis, and his a great guy!
