It's unbelivable the island with a diameter of roughly 60 kilometres can boast so many different landscapes. It's not an exaggeration to say it's a miniature continent that, thanks to its mild climate, can be enjoyed at any time of the year.
The legend has it that Tenerife is what remained from the fabulous continent of Atlantis. In fact, this volcanic island has been inhabitated for over 2000 years. The indigenous people where Guanche, who lived there in the prehispanic times but were overcome by the invaders in the 15th century. If you want more on the turbulent history of Tenerife visit the museum in La Laguna or dig in the Internet.
Now Tenerife is the main island of the archipelago with population of about 800 thousand people and with more than 10 million visitors a year.
It has two airports but the more frequented one is located in the southern part of the island and is conveniently connected with major turist resorts by public transportation.
How to get there
By plane. A wide array of air carriers operate to this location. Among them you can find both low costs as well as regular airlines. Budget airlines include Air Berlin, Condor, Jetairfly, Ryanair, TUIfly and undoubtedly many others. We chose Ryainair as it offered the cheapest prices and the possibility to fly from Wroclaw to Girona and then to Tenerife South. When choosing two flights with Ryanair you have to bear in mind these are not connecting flights, so you may come across a problem when your luggage is lost or a flight delayed. Fortunately we had no such complications. The only drawback was the necessity to spend a night at the airport.
Climate
It's mild all year round. You have to remember it's different between the south and the north. The discrepancy is caused by the fact there is a mountain range along the island and there are two ocean currents (Gulf Stream and the Canarian current) of different temperatures washing the the island.
